I thought the sulfur was added at the refinery so, less sulfur, less money to produce.

Running on cooking oil. Its not a good idea for any of the current crop of diesels out there today. They do good on indirect injected engines and can be made to run alright on some later ones but in my opinion they will be an expensive error. Do some reading on this before you try it. Now running one or two gallons per tankful may not be too bad.

Sulfur has to be taken out of the oil however the cost to do so was not at all the reason for the high prices of diesel compared to gas. The industry was predicting between 4 and 5 cents per gallon extra for the new fuel in refining costs.
The real reason diesel is so high is that they are just not refining as much of it here. Diesel is being used by so many upcoming countries that the type of oil that they refine diesel from has more competition for it. Almost half of all cars in Europe and something like that in Asia are running diesel. Yup, they've figured out that the extra 25-30 percent more energy that diesel has per unit is worth running diesel. Europe subsidises diesel so that it is cheaper than gas.
If you will Google up historical data on diesel fuel you will find that somewhere around 2000 to 2002 diesel prices compared to gas changed. Diesel used to be slightly less than gas but in the early part of this century something happened(I think competition for diesel) that made diesel more expensive. I don't look for diesel to get cheaper than gas except for short durations anytime soon. That is unless the govt starts making that higher energy fuel more attractive.

I read up on making bio diesel and it can be done. With all the time and the risk I chose not to do so. Its not that hard and can be done in a garage but an out building would be more appropiate.
I read about running waste oils or cooking oils and I chose not to that either.

I think I need to research "horses".

I know a man (a VP at work) that has a biodiesel setup in his garage. He was making it for a while and we ran it in our trucks at work with very little difference in power or mileage. He hasn't been pursuing it for 6 or 7 months, but I believe his setup was capable of 40-50 gals a week. He told me his cost was running about 60 cents per gallon. I think he said he put it together for about $300.

Alloson 1,

You are very correct concerning Europe using more diesel. I have also found out that the US is trading large amounts of diesel for unleaded fuel.

If you want to invest in a horse, I have a bunch of young paints for sale.

The sulfur is stripped from the crude during the refining process which results in more cost to produce. The lower sulfur also results in less lubricity for your pumps and injectors so now additional lubricity additives are being added to make up for the lower sulfur.

It's put a stop on my plans to make my next truck a diesel. At least until these prices start to drop and stabilize a little.

$3.22 at Murphy W/M in Seagoville. It is rediculous. Gouging the trucking industry and we all pay. The oil companies and others in higher places, as high the highest two offices in the country have benefited from this situation.
Before Willie got into, I saw a thing on Fox 4 a couple a years ago about buying the stuff to make it.
