You can get into Black Tips off the jetty and in the surf with a large Piggy under a balloon work a moving tide for best action. Lots of nice Black Tips are caught in the surf around PINS. Makos are pelagic Blue Water sharks so you need to fish the rigs out around 20-25 miles and farther for a good chance at a Mako. A Butterfly cut Bonito free lined is about the best bait or a Big Hard-tail under a balloon. Make sure you use a steel leader as long as the sharks you trying to catch. You will have to put up with the Kings and Barracuda if you use frozen sardines or live bait. Good Luck Yall! Bazz

I saw an interesting tip on here somewhere about using the outgoing tide and a balloon and using a life saver to hold the bait close to the balloon until it gets out from the rocks. The lifesaver melts and drops your line down. I thought that was really clever. Next time I go to Port A I am going to give it a shot.

I have that book. My brother in-law got it for me. Its a really good book. Has some really tips. A friend of mine actually used the lifesaver technique in the Eastern Siarras in California for trout when the was bank fishing on a bigger lake.
As far as the Makos go....Slow troll cutbait or whole macks about 50-100yrds beind the boat.
Or flyline macks, dead or alive, if your driftin n chummin! If the macks are dead and sinking then you can cut a whole in the macks belly and push some popcorn packing materia in the cavity to keep it closer to the top.

Big southern always produces a Mako for us in the spring. We use the ballon and a whole bonito works like a champ.

Use to use the life savers on the east coast of florida surf fishing for sailfish with live runners. Go on a day with a good offshore wind to carry the balloon out.

J-BOB Stop with the screaming we all hear you!!!!
Black tips can be caught along the jetties and outward, freeline large fresh shad, if you are catching your shad, take a few dozen of the smaller ones and cut into 5ths into a bucket and add a little Manhadden oil and oat-meal and use a cup or so every 10 minutes until they show.
Along the Jetties we usually catch 2-3 footers, occassionaly bigger. Get out 3-4 miles and drift or anchor and use the chum and you'll get the bigger ones.
I've never hooked a mako, never been out far enough, but Bonita are supposed to be the best, just remember that bonita will fall apart quickly. Try using a pair of nylons wrapped around the bonita to keep it together.
Something else I've read is to use Stingray, and two hooks one on either side of the body, then cut down the center of the wings near the bodyto get them bleeding... Supposed to be like candy for them and they cannot resist.... ---------
One note though, be careful with the Manhadden oil this time of the year. I used this type of chum a few weeks ago off galveston, and I think it's responsible for pulling in the Bull Reds that my son and I were catching.

Alright guys we had a great trip last week got down on monday to care of some errands wind was blowing like 40 mph and we drove down the beach and it was blowin the tops off the waves comin in , tuesday went out in the blue wave just in the bay and caught some small reds and specks, wednesday was THE day i caught a 32,35,37,and 39 inch bull reds and a 4 1/2 ft blacktip, and my buddy caught about 5 blacktips and 1 38 1/2 inch red all from 30 ft of water off the end of the north jetty kinda south east of it. We went back out thursday to try it again but the wind was to stought even in the Century we wouldnt have been able to hold anchor, but did go back out friday to the same spot and i caught about 5 or 6 stingrays wish michaels post woulda been last week cause we had the bait, but it goes in the memory bank any how nothin on the graph and nothin but rays and hardheads to be caught in the honey hole so we hit the close rigs and caught about 5 i thought they were blacktips but Brian said the were atlantic long nose sharks and they didnt get much bigger than the dinks we were catchin any how all in all a pretty good trip.....jbob

SE of the North Jetties is prime Shark territory, that's the main area that we head to when we are lookin for Shark.
Those Bull Reds are fun aren't they? I wish I had the time to make another run to the coast for the Bull Reds, but my next chance won't be till December, by then it's a waste to go.
I'm planning to have a week or more next September to fish for Reds, as well as starting in June I'll be making weekend trips for sharks at least once a month.
