I have a 2001 Yamaha 100 4 stoke. Friday on the way in from fishing it started knocking. I was running at about 5500 rpm slowed down to 2000 rpm and it would stop, gave it a little gas and it would start again. While filling up Friday mourning I notice a dark stain on top of the gas tank. It looks like a water stain. Could water have got into the gas tank and caused it to knock?

Sounds like a bearing or a piston went out. I wouldn't run it again until you have it checked out.

Knocking is not a good sign

Anytime you hear a knock, stop running. Something is right. The more you run it, the more you damage it. And it may already be too late to repair.

sounds like a piston pin has come loose....

Take it to Eldon and Tommy at Rockwall Marine.... I am "more than" thoroughly impressed with the service I received from them on my Yammie!!!

Thank Michial I'm going to do that after I remove all the gas and check it for water.

You don't have to remove all the gas. Disconnect your fuel line fitting, and pump the bulb. Get a quart container that is clear, and fill it up. If you have water in your fuel, you will see it seperate.

If you don't, then no use wasting your time draining all your fuel. Simply put your fuel fitting back on and your done!

I'll try that, and thanks for the info.
