Well this one hurt a bit....took out some missonaries fishing this morning...one father and son and another man that has never caught a cat before....the boy was 6yrs old and never fished....we hammered the cats...1 to 3 pounders most of the morning...then the dad hooked into a good one...netted it and weighed it back at the dock..it weighed 9.50.... the record on EM. is 8.04 for channels....the bad thing is I did not know this until after I cleaned it...I never weigh fish....I won some scales in a tourney this weekend and decided to weigh the fish...on my way home I left a message to one of my fishing buddies ...he called me back and asked me what I did with the fish..I told him and he said that I just cleaned the new lake record...looked it up on the net and sure enough....we celibrated our record this evening by eating him with hush puppies and fries.....well that's the story....and I wish I had never won the scales.....

I know how you feel on that one. Years and years ago i caught the Kansas state catfish record but didn't think it was at the time, so I ate him. Found out the next day I had just ate the catfish record.

There was a guy here in Louisiana that caught one of the tagged redfish for the STAR tournament. For those unfamiliar, the STAR is put on by CCA and lasts from Memorial to Labor Day. You have to enter to be eligible. 50 redfish are caught and tagged along the coast and a registered angler who catches one of the first 10 fish wins a brand new 21ft. bayboat. This guy who was registered for the tournament caught a tagged redfish, took it home and cleaned it. He took the tag to a marina that handled the tournament. He was disqualified because you have to the tag in the fish and the fish can't be cleaned or scaled. I would be pretty sick if I did that.

My friend caught a new Channel cat record this past weekend on Grapevine. We didn't understand why the old record was so low until we tried to find a certified scale. There wasn't one on the lake. He ended up carrying it on ice for almost 24 hours before he could get it weighed. It should show up in the records in a few weeks.

IMO if you land something that would be a record, then you should know it when you land it. Most cat fisherman probably aren't concerned with a 9 lb. cat being a record. They just remember it as a nice fish. If I caught a 9 lb. cat, record or not, it wouldn't be worth my time. I'm after the yellow and blue cat lake records of 40-80 lbs. I could care less about a 9 lb. channel.

CRAZY STORY I did the same thing on Ray Hubbard! 61lb Blue, never thought to look it up until it was in the freezer. Kicked my self in the butt. It would have been cool to be in the record books. Maybe it might have validated to my wife all the time I spend chasin the cats.
