I have a 2004 yamaha 225 hpdi. The water intake for the speedometer is on the very bottom of the lower unit foot. Every time I hit a stump (at idle) this plugs up with wood and the speedometer will not work. Well after years of this the hole is wallered out and totally plugged off. To make matters worse I was told to use a drill bit to clean it and guess what, it broke off in the hole. There is no way I can get it out.. So my question is "Can this be fixed?" Is there a machine shop fix or is it forever plugged?? Any help would be appreciated.

I am sure it can , but is it worth it ? Who cares how fast you are going ? If it is important , use a gps , they are much more accurate.

Since your engine is over 3 years old it is time for a new water pump impellor anyway. When you hve it done see if the tech can remove the drill bit for you.
One thing which may not have been told to you is that you only use your fingers with the drill bit (never a drill or any kind of tool.)

It really isn't worth the effort to dig out that drillbit when a remote speed-0 sending unit is only $10.00..... and any home owner that has a drill can install it in under 1/2 hour.

Little late for the only use fingers! And you are all correct that a speed O is not that necessary and I do have GPS. However I hate having something broken. It really drives me crazy so I thought maybe it can be fixed. Thanks for the replies. If you have another idea let me know.

Think how much time you'll save in the future not having to worry about something that never worked very well anyway.
Boat speedometers are pretty well useless, along with the trim gauge and fuel gauge.

OK , if it is a mental health issue, Replace the lower unit. ![smile smile](/forums/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) We have enough crazies on the lake already. MO

If you are fishing in timber, there is no way to avoid this. The plastic speedo pickups get broken off. So I wouldn't worry about it.
