I believe I have some issues with my starter and need to know the pro's and con's of purchcasing a new one or having one rebuilt? Also, any recommendations for a place in Fort Worth to have a starter rebuilt?

I'm not in the Ft Worth area, but I can tell you, if you get it rebuilt, it should be under a 100.00..My Evinrude was 75.00 and it works like new.. A new one can be around 300.00..

I generally don't mess with rebuilds. Had WAY too many bad experiences with them. Very limited warranties, and once they go out again, your looking at either building it again, or buying a new one.

I've got a rebuild on my flats boat that's 8 years old...it really will depend on who's doing the work.

I'm with Pat. I've used a local rebuilder for many starters on everything from welders to Bobcats to cars. His work has always been very good. He rebuilt my Merc 200 starter for $78 and it is strong.

I bought a new starter 3 years ago for my 225 Merc. It was the original from 1981. It had been rebuilt 2 times before but the arature was gone, so a new one was really needed. I just got my starter rebuilt on a 1988 Suzuki 85HP. It was the first time to rebuild but it needed a new armature also. It cost 1/2 of a new starter. I use the Suzuki about every other day so time will tell if it was a bargin or a band aid!!!
