It has it's moments, but I'd rank it near the bottom compared to most lakes I've fished in Texas. The pleasure boaters and bulk heads make summer mid-day structure almost unfishable.

I just got back from fishing Conroe for bass, for the first time in fifteen to twenty years. The grass and the water clarity was great to see. It reminded me of Conroe in the late seventies, without the trees of course. Yes there are more boats and jetskis, but with the grass being back you can get away from them.
I caught seven nice bass north of the 1097 bridge on top water baits and plastics.
I think it will be good this fall and next year. It will not be one of the great state fishery, but it could only get better, if the land owners do not keep putting pressure on the state to kill all the grass. They won last month and more carp were put into the lake to kill the grass, then the state had planned.
Have a good day and great fishing,

summer-4 fall-6 winter-1 spring-10
this place is unreal in the spring, for about a month and a half each year u can catch 20 lbs a day and a chance to catch 40 lbs. i dont think people realize just how many big fish are in this place. not many lakes in texas where u can see tons of big fish in feb.

Learning the lake and the structure will always produce numbers of fish. as far as catfish and bream, Lake Conroe is ranked very high in the state by fishermen and TPWD

i agree with on_deck...2 years ago i fished every weekend at conroe from december through march and had 4 trips under 20 pounds biggest was right around 25 pounds although i fished with a buddy that caught 33 pounds in front of me...there are about a week or so every year that u can go out sight fishing and catch 3 or 4 fish over 7 pounds in a day...it always seems to last just one year....its awesome though the number of fish u will see in the shallows in the spring time...

Spring 10 Summer 5 (typical early morning bite, but pleasure boaters kill surface schooling and the evening bite) Fall 8 (great numbers, but they run small for me) winter 9 (shhhh, don't tell anyone, but throw some traps and crankbaits)

Wow. this lake is getting alot better ratings than i thought. i do fair in the spring but i had been going to rayburn in the spring. i guess i should concentrate on conroe for spring. i still stink at finding off shore structure/cover on conroe.
during summer are you fishing north or south of 1097 primarily??

Have you seen the area around the smaller 1097 bridge. The bridge is east of the long bridge, by a shell station/marina. It appears to be choked with weed right now. Have you tried this area?

it's not as good as little lake IMO, but I've caught some nice fish in that area. Got one of the 9.5's I caught last year from that area.

Conroe will just keep getting better... if they leave it alone. I'd give it a 6.

Conroe is a great lake for catfish and it is rated as one of the best for channel cats. It does receive a lot of pressure from bass fishermen for its size. From what I have read about the lakes farther north, it is not nearly as good a white bass and hybrid lake as those. However, I have had luck a couple times on white bass. Unfortunately, all the hybrids I have caught have been undersized.
