You people on the coast. I'd like to take my boat out 15-30 miles offshore. Worried about emergencies. My cell phone worked 7 miles out (in bay) last trip to POC. However I'd like to have a backup and be able to send a emergency message if I"M out farther. What's the solution, SSB, CB, GRMS???

Marine radio. Do not rely on CB or cell phones. They both have a limited range of around 5 miles. Don't get a handheld (around $100), you need a unit with a bigger antenna for range. There is a Cobra with a 36 inch antenna for $120 (a great buy). http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...mp;cmid=PP_P0_2PS- Have a professional install it. Mounting the antenna is critical, you cannot just bolt it anywhere.
