Hey all,

Anyone in hear a pro at Ford CEL issues? MY daily driver is a 2000 Ranger with a 3.0L v-6, and a 5spd manual tranny. The truck has 164k miles on it now, and my check engine light has recently come on. Of course it's due for inspection this month. The CEL code was P0401, I believe insufficient egr flow. In the past, I've had this same code which was the result of a failed DPFE sensor. I suspect the EGR valve itself is the issue this time since I've replaced the sensor before. Additionally, about a week ago, I heard an audible whistling type sound coming from inside the the upper intake manifold(I pulled up the air intake to verify the location). I suspect that my EGR valve is partially plugged resulting in the sound I heard, and the CEL code I have. Also, my truck has been running noticeably hotter once it's been warmed up and has been running up the freeway for awhile. I'm planning to pull the valve and clean it as best I can w/ carb cleaner, then reset everything and see if it solves the issue. If not, I will replace the EGR valve.

Does this sound like the proper course of action? Is there anything else I should be looking at which may be resulting in this check engine code and the increased engine temp?

Help/comments appreciated! Thanks!
-Matt

it is possible that you have some carbon build up in the egr causing it to stick i would go and get a gasket and remove it and check to see if it is sticking and are the return spring is not broken.also be sure to check the vacuum line going to it 401 is for insufficient flow another words the computer is expecting more airflow when it is commanded on and it is not seeing it from the 02 sensors.

That sounds like a vacum leak.

I'll second the vacuum leak. At 164K, some of those lines are rotten. Had this issue on a 94 Mazda B3000 3.0L

That whistling noise you hear could possibly be restriction in the plenum itself it the above items have been checked..

Remove the egr valve and trottle body. Clean out the passage leading from the egr valve to the intake.
