Went offshore fishing over the weekend saw a little colorfull bird that came on the boat we almost was able to pick it up! I never seen a bird like that before it was out on a rig. Anyone seen these before? I'm new here, first post.

It might have been a tropical bird that got blown far off course due to the two recent large Hurricanes that hit down in Mexico / Yucatan?? Bazz

I had a yellow/ light green little bird that looked alot like a finch or sparrow and about the same size that landed on my leaning post not 2 foot from me as I was landing a 30 pound shark. It sat there and watched the action for a good while. We were out at the first wells at Port A. It flew around the boat and then landed below the leaning post. I reached down and picked it up to put it on top of the center console so it wouldn't get stepped on and it gave a little sgueek and I let it go and it flew around the boat for a little while and flew off. Weird!!! ___________ Notch

It would be close to impossible to ID the bird without a photo. Land birds ofter get blown off course and out to sea so it could be any of a hundred species and the differances between them can be subtle. During the spring migration, there are millions of small birds that cross the gulf and thats no easy feat for such a tiny critter. (I had heard once that for some species, up to a third don't succeed in the crossing.) They are usually exhausted and will land on anything handy to rest. An oil platform, your boat and even the fishing rod in your hand. They are simply too tired to be afraid of you. Sailors usually refer to them as "Rigging birds". If you have ever been around High Island in the spring, you probably noticed the abundance of birdwatchers. They go there because the migrating birds can see it from far out in the gulf and will make a beeline for it. If a late spring front should hit at that time and the birds can't continue on north, every shrub will be packed with birds that under normal conditions would be hard to get close to.
Oh and maybe it's just me but I consider it "good luck" to get such a visitor.
