Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.

ive always known them as garden spiders. i think they are amazing, but i have never seen more in one season than i have in this summer. i look outside my window and all i see in the texas mesquite trees are big spots(the spiders). i looked out my window the other day and counted almost 30 in one little area. ewwwww and even worse, i am deathly afraid of spiders. eeek.

We called them garden spiders as well and we would always toss insects in the web too. Harmless as mentioned above. I have seen hummingbirds get caught in their webs at my Mom's house. I did have to extinguish one when I was a kid. We were dove hunting and my uncle was pulling up on the barbed wire fence so I could get through. As I bent over and stuck my head between the fence wires, I ended up with one of those on my head. I went crazy trying to get that thing off of me and finally managed to get it off my head and onto the ground. About 20 rounds out of my bb gun did the trick.. HAHA

I like spiders. They eat bugs. I dislike them when they build webs all over everything I own.

Common garden spider. My mom has 2 about the size of the one in the pictures outside her front door. Each one has a huge web, and she had decided they are pretty and out of the way so she has let them be. I told her they were harmless and ate tons of bugs and she said by all means are they welcome!
YAY MOM!
They catch mosquitos too!!!
Double YAY!!!

Technically I believe theyre an Orb Spider but weve always called them a Cotton Spider in the farming business. We could always find them along the turn rows of cotton and corn fields. They are really beneficial. Ive known custom harvesters to catch them and carry them back to West Texas and Oklahoma.

Argiope aurantia, that's a female. Harmless. She'll be laying an eggsac before long, probably off to the side. hes right. these spiders are really cool, the zig zag is a mystery to scientists. they say it could be used to catch the attention of birds so they dont destroy their web, or it could be used to adjust tension on the web. if you stare close enough to the web. you can see three different parts to the web. there is the hub(where the zigzag is, and where the spider stays) the frame(the non sticky part of the web construction) and the sticky web that the insects get stuck on. if you look close enough you can see the drops of sticky stuff on the sticky part of the web. the spiders are like robots, they always do the same thing when you mess with them. if you touch the web they rock back and forth, and if you threaten them too much they drop to the ground and hide out for a few hours. i sat and messed around with a bunch of them for like an hour after i read this post
