I’ve given my nephews and BIL hell because they’re 19 and 22 and have never mowed or weedeated a yard. Well myself and another neighbor helped our neighbor and wife lay 2 pallets of sod this morning. They have a 17 year old son and 21 year old daughter who never graced us with their presence.

My son who’s 33 would 1. Be out there on his own or 2. I’d go get his [censored] and tell him to get his [censored] outside and help.

So, whose fault is it those kids aren’t helping? There’s a huge difference in that 11 year gap of my son and the above mentioned. My son would be out there because of expectations I assume.

Parents pay for yard companies to do the yard work now, so the kids never learn. My son knew it was one of his weekly chores. We paid him a little for doing it, but he did it every week without argument.

+1 What usually happens is the kids don’t want to help and either gripe about it or do a bad job so the parents just give in. I see it with some on my street. Grown kids live at home and don’t help with anything at all and parents just let them get away with it.

There are some real soft parents around.

I knew a neighbor, older guy, who wouldn’t let his 20 year old son clean the gutters out because he was worried about him falling off the ladder. Let the kid fall of the ladder, he’ll learn.

Pathetic parenting.

I explained to my sons that they will be mowing the lawn when they were old enough. I will admit I did the edging because I was very particular about it. They mowed from about age 12 until they moved out

Without a doubt. thumb

With that being said, the kids turn into adults and have choices to make.
A: grow up and take responsibility or B: Peter pan
I feel a vast majority are opting for B and are or will be DEMS.

Kids are a direct reflection of their parents/parent/parenting. ...witnessed it up close and personal my entire life.

I mentioned something about mowing my yard one day to my boss and he said he has his done. He has two sons 25 and 28 who have never left home. I wondered why their lazy azzes are not mowing.

My son does everything. Mows, trims, prunes the trees, hauls off the branches, does his own laundry, vacuums the floors and mops the floors, cleans the kitchen.

My daughter does nothing. Goes to counseling once a week.

If I say a WORD about it, it’s a fight.

Steez..I know EXACTLY what you are saying...if not a fight then somehow I become the bad guy!

The rest of you guys I really envy...it appears that your superior skills regarding parenting and living life have afforded you with extra time to grumble and moan about people who obviously are lacking in those particular skills..

Kids need to learn responsibility. There needs to be a clear list of what is expected. And everyone needs to know what the consequences will be if they don't do whatever chore it might be. It is basically the adult's fault if there are no consequences for not doing what they (the kid's) are responsible for. If you wait until they're in their teens YOU are gonna have a long, long row to hoe with them as they get even older.
