Would be wise to get the info off the boxes and order some spares to keep on hand. Especially capacitors.
In the mean time Brian, go get a box fan from the local box store and put it on top of the condensor unit blowing straight up. This will at least help y'all stay cooler for a bit. The more CFM you pull through, the better. Im glad I read this, because my dumb are was going to get one and point it down LMAO

I've got one of the most reasonable HVAC guys as a customer that I know. I'm happy to share his contact if you'd like. I even tell him he needs to charge more but

It’s that time of year. Any problems you may have been able to limp through during the winter are going to show up when you start putting a load on the compressor. If you aren’t in a good preventative maintenance schedule, then you are going to spend a lot of money on this stuff.
If you don’t want to pay somebody to do PM, at the very least change your filter and wash off your condenser coils. Great advise.. I have a PM yearly on AC and yearly on my gas heater..only a minor issue in 6 years with AC..

Company that installed ours 10 years ago charges $150 a year for PM and it’s the best money for peace of mind I’ve ever spent. Comes twice a year and checks heat and AC both times. He cleans outside unit, tests everything inside and writes a report that we both get a copy of. THIS ^^^^^

The AC only goes out because you are using it.
I think I could go out looking for dirt and it would be out of stock.

Went through that a few times, and compressor and capacitors right and left I must have an A/C curse. This has happened to me so many times in my life. Me too. I have two window units in boxes in our storage building ….just for this oh so happy occasion. I can put both of them in my living room and close off the rest of the house and make a freezer if I need to. When it happens, it’s one in the living room and one in the master bedroom. The kids can sleep on the couch if they want to. Haha

This is exactly why everyone should have an emergency window unit or two in a closet or garage.

We don’t talk about AC issues. I think AC’s have the ability to listen….lol.

I've got three units. One manages to have an issue each year. This year one needed to be replaced. Never really considered the percentage of value to home before

Keeping them clean, both outside unit and filters is the key to longevity. If you don't know how to replace a capacitor you're spending a TON you shouldn't have to pay. It literally takes less than 30 minutes to swap one out, and generally they're the first thing to pop. HVAC guys now are charging $200+ to swap one out and you can buy em for less than $40 in most cases. Also, if you have a lot of ants on your property you had better make sure to check around your condenser and kill em off. They love to get in between the contact points. Also a back up fan motor is a good idea.

I keep a spare capacitor on hand for each of the AC units and have a multimeter that has the capacitance (µF) testing function. We have had 2 air handler motors go out on the downstairs unit and the AC place charges a huge mark up of them. On the last replacement I kept the box the motor came in and I purchased a replacement for less than 1/4 of the price they charged. The last time one went out, the motors was not in stock in East Texas due to the power surge after a big storm. It got 4 houses on my street that I know of. Now anytime the power goes out, I go to the breaker box and trip the all of the AC breakers and wait 15 minutes after the power comes back on.
