The average person (who can remain calm under duress) with average hand eye and average spatial awareness could, if properly instructed, land a small plane.....many have done it.

If a parachute is available I would feel more comfortable just abandoning the plane-

Actually, you could be better off on the grass adjacent to the runway, an intentional lesser evil choice prudent in certain circumstances.... less chance of sparks then fire you wouldn't care for

My sons plane actually has a parachute lever to pull as long as you're above 400' above ground level.
