I go out of SF bay in the summer for halibut --- have to use Scopalimine patch ---one on my right ear night before . It works great --- we typically have 4-8' seas about 8-10 seconds apart . Only problem is I feel drunk standing on the ground --once I get on the boat --totally OK .

If you are out on the ocean, keep your eye on the horizon. It helps to keep you from getting sick. I spend about 30-45 days offshore a year and never get sick. Today was the exception.

Today was the exception. there was an episode of Deadliest catch and , Sig , Capt of the Northwestern said he has years where the first few days on the water he gets seasick than it magically goes away .

It hit me crossing the English Channel on a ferry. But the wind was from the north and there were some monster waves coming in from the North Atlantic. I didn't throw up but if there had been another 30 minutes of it I'm sure I would have lost it. The boat was rocking enough that you couldn't walk unless you were up against a wall or had something to hold on to.

I went on one cruise. Used all three, patch behind ear, wrist band and the pills and still had nausea the entire trip. No more cruises for me, all except would do the Alaska one if I could kayak while there.

Its weird what might cause that.. been in all kinds of seas and no sickness, was going to a wedding in the bahamas by sailboat.. went down into cabin to get something to eat and before I could climb back on deck was about to puke.. dead calm water in intracoastal waterway before even making it out to sea.. We had strong winds against us, three sailboats... turned around after 6 hours fighting strong headwinds and rough seas... 20 out of 25 guests on the three boats sick as a dog when we made it back to Miami marina.

Pa told of a time while in the Navy during Korean war, he had to climb the main mast of the heavy cruiser because radio coms went out.
At night.
During a typhoon.
Mast and ship were rocking at 45°.
He puked.

Happened to me on July 5th fishing out of Coos Bay OR. Let's just say we had a real good time watching fire works the night before and didn't get much sleep. That's the only time I got sick. My wife and I went fishing out of Coos Bay on our honeymoon, luckily neither of us got sick but a 12 year old girl was miserably seasick, everybody limited out and the captain said we could keep fishing if we wanted to. I got everybody on the boat to vote to go back in to get that poor kid off the water.

Back in May 1980, I had just moved to Milwaukee and joined a Scuba diving club. Our first dive as a group was going to be on a sunken paddle wheeler (the Niagara) off of Belgium WI. Port Washington is the closest launch ramp to the wreck so we had about a 10-mile boat ride to the wreck site. No big deal on most days but there was about 30 mile and hour winds coming out of the S.E. (still OK) but as we were nearing the wreck site the wind shifted to S.W. a horrible direction on the west shore of lake Michigan. We were forced to turn around in 6–8-foot seas which were quickly increasing to about 10ft. We were on two larger (32 and 36 feet) boats so were in no real danger but A LOT of people were getting sea sick. There was also a smaller (24 feet) boat with club members following us. As I looked out the cabin window several people on the upper deck were puking over the side right past the window I was sitting near.
The smaller boat came closer to us and they were asking for beer (we had the coolers on the bigger boats). I was throwing full beer cans to them. Some of them made it and others Lake Michigan got. When we finally got in, I was the only one on the bigger boats that was not sick. All the guys on the smaller boat were fine. So, the four of us sat down and drank some beers and shot the shi** for a while. One of the guys on the smaller boat was the owner. We became very good dive buddies and dove together for the next 20 years. We had a few other interesting dive trip adventures but that was probably the most memorable.

I stayed near Sebastian Inlet one time. It was like a rollercoaster every time we headed out to the Atlantic. Lots of boats swamp in those inlets.

It gets bad even on a submarine sometimes when you are at periscope depth and the there is a storm over the ocean. Water hitting the sail (conning tower) rocking it back and forth or breaking over the periscope. I came real close to barfing, one time, I was waiting in line for chow, and the boat was rocking back and forth. I got to the serving window and the cook was handing me the plate when she rolled side to side and I almost barfed there. I just left and went back to the electronics space.
On the surface it sucks for the bridge crew when every, or every second or third wave brakes over the sail (conning tower). No place to duck to, you just take have to take it.

Are them dolphins good eatin'? Mahi not flipper Yes, mahi-mahi, dolphin, or dorado. The one from this morning will make 3 meals, and it was small at 23 1/2" to the fork.
