Rip. He was 89 and still walking tall! By the way, he was from Groesbeck, Texas.

Joe Don Looney

A true Texas legend born in Moo City and graduated from Paschal.

In his first semester at Texas, Looney received four Fs and one D. He dropped out and enrolled at TCU. He was kicked out of TCU and transferred to Cameron Junior College where he won a national championship. He transferred to Oklahoma and made All-American and led them to the Big Eight Conference championship. Iconic head coach Bud Wilkinson kicked him off the team because he was such a major problem.

Looney was the 12th overall pick in the 1964 NFL draft by the New York Football Giants. He was traded 25 days later for racking up a number of fines for violating team rules.

Looney was ranked as the most uncoachable player in NFL history by NFL Films president Steve Sabol. He would often intentionally run the wrong way on plays in practice in order to make things more challenging for himself.

He endured because he was a physical specimen, a white Marcus Dupree, but his demise was he wasn’t a mainstream kind of person.
