Goodman would have been great in the role twenty, thirty years ago. He is waaaaaay too old to pull this off now. Madden was a young man in the 60s and 70s. Nicolas is only 11 years younger Chronologically. Goodman looks old as dirty these days. No way could he play a late 30s to mid 50s Madden. Madden was an athlete and moved well as a younger man. Goodman's less than stellar performance in that Babe Ruth movie likely didn't help him out here either.

It's not "hate" to point out that he plays the same character time after time... himself. Exact same voice pattern... speech pattern and inflection... etc. Doesn't make him a terrible actor, just redundant. On the other hand, Bale is brilliant.... several levels above most IMOP. "The Machinist" "3:10 to Yuma" "American Hustle" "Ford vs Ferrari" etc etc etc... Totally different "person"... each unrecognizable from the other. However, if some disagree, and they will, it's not "hate."

As far as Goodman goes, he is one of my favorites and was just 80s 90s greatness on Roseanne

Raising Arizona was a good movie. Con air was classic. I haven't seen the Dracula movie he was is, but he was probably born to play Dracula.
