I haven’t caught one of these since my days as a kid (60 years) fishing in creeks and gravel pits.

I’ve never caught one on a main lake. Have caught a few here and there in creeks and ponds. They make easy prey so they don’t show up very often on the main lake. Good flathead (or any larger catfish) bait.

Pollies, pollywogs, bull heads, mudcats, and catfish, as a kid. The last one our group caught was in the very end of the creek by rod-n-reel at Running Branch Marina on Lake Limestone Mother's Day weekend 2023.

Now, trivia.

Do you know why a YellowCat is sometimes referred to as a MudCat?

Because, when one is caught & they are desperate to get off, they will dive for the bottom and do one of two things, if possible. One is duck under an obstruction such as a log or shelf. Second is that sometime they will dive & bury themselves into the mud creating a suction so they cannot be pulled in. This second one is the reason they are called also MudCats.

I caught this on a chatter bait out of a farm pond south of Abilene. Do y'all think this is one of these yellow bullheads or polywogs?

That’s what it is. And it’s a big one. They were my Moms favorite fish. But on retrospect, she always claimed that the least popular thing was her favorite if she thought no one else wanted it. She always said her favorite piece of fried chicken was the neck.
