I was skeptical of four stroke outboards since all I have known are 2 strokes but have had great performance and service out of my 60hp Mercury 4 stroke so far. It is quiet and has very low fuel consumption. I like changing the oil on the outboard like I would a vehicle.

That's a tuff question. I love my 1997 88 SPL Johnson, and love the looks I get when it's warming up at the ramp on area lakes. I love it even more when I drop the hammer and but my salt water sled on plane. Anyway, this engine is a beast and I'm not certain what I'll do when it's time to replace my OB. Just recently, I had it serviced (replace water pump impeller) and the techs mentioned that these old 2 strokes are wanted due to low maintenance and reliability.

I have a 2019 Mercury 150 4 stroke, and a 2013 Mercury 225 2 stroke.
I like the 4 stroke better. I compare the two as the 4 stroke being a brand new F150, and the 2 stroke being a 300k mile 7.3 powerstroke. Theyโ€™ll both run, but the 4 stroke has less hiccups.

4 stroke pro xs sounds so much better than 2 stroke pro xs. Especially at start up.

No doubt! No better sound in the morning on the water.

If what you do requires immediate torque, like Mr Goff, then 2 strokes are the way to go. Like he said, NOTHING jumps like a 2 stroke. I had a 2 stroke Tohatsu on a 16 footer and adored it for it's light weight and giddy up. It never let me down in 20 years of service.

For smooth, quiet, efficient performance a 4 stroke deserves consideration.

For a pun -- "different strokes for different folks" smile

2 stroke all day every day. Lower maintenance, better performance, and lighter with less moving parts.

So I've only owned and do own 2 strokes....but I love 4's....

Now, with that said and call me batsh#t, but, there's just something about pulling away from the ramp at daylight wafting up 2 stroke fumes that smells like fishing.... ๐Ÿ˜‰ (I guess it brings back so many great memories of fishing with my father and grandfather)

I think four strokes are better for boats that make long runs, troll or idle a lot. Two strokes are better for cold starts and short fast runs.
