I’ve fish in all of it. Lightning, hail, torrential rain, severe wind. None of it is too fun. If I’m on a dock lake, I’ll look for an opening. I’ve taken shelter in a rod box once. Also spot locked into the storm and got in as close to the console as I could.
It’s part of fishing in Texas. Storms can come up quick. My least favorite is lightning. It’s too random.

I've always thought the lightning messed up the shallow fishing. Last week while prefishing we started on a spot that the Shad had been spawning like crazy. We had some early morning storms (2-3am). The shad spawn was completely gone that morning. We still caught fish there but the shad were gone. Ended up starting there tournament morning and the shad were back the next day. The fishing was actually way better when the shad were not spawning in big numbers. So maybe it bothers the shad worse than the bass. Just thought it was interesting. Wasn't a ton of rain so I think the change had to be due to the lightning.

Here are the effects of lightning on a kayak. It’s polypropylene ….it would look like that if left in the sun too long. Haha

I've logged enough hours to know to get to shore ASAP and get in your vehicle if you can. Growing up in Louisiana the afternoon heat driven thunderstorms happen pretty regular in the summer and a few of them have cornered me on lakes and rivers. By the time you hear the thunder it is to late; lot of times you'll here that before you see the clouds, they develop so fast you can't get away. I've been nearly popped by lightning while on the water more than once, one strike was probably less than 10 yards from me. It hit a cottonwood tree on the shore and it rained tree bark on me.

I remember making a cast during a lightning storm and my line was floating so bad my weightless fluke was just barely touching the water as it skipped across... followed by one of the loudest cracks of lightning... heavier baits and side arm delivery highly recommended.

If you are in the outdoors long enough you will end up with a lightening story. I am sure that most of the 20 plus people who die in the US each year from lightening strikes never thought it would happen to them.
