I’m really leaning towards switching to lithium batteries for my boat. I’m liking the weight savings and the longevity of not replacing batteries every 2 years. I’m looking for a budget friendly set up. I’ve got a 2000 Cobra, 36v trolling motor, 2 HDS 12’s, plus the usual components in the boat. Also looking into adding power poles, hence why I’m looking into lighter batteries. If anyone has any suggestions. Not necessarily the cheapest, just best bang for the buck. Also, what is everyone using for the cranking battery?

Is an outboard designed to charge a lithium battery would be my first question.

Is an outboard designed to charge a lithium battery would be my first question. Outboards are not designed to charge any specific battery. The all have a charging system, be it a stator/rotor or alternator and have a regulator to control voltage output. Lithium cranking batteries have a BMS (battery management system, aka a small circuit board to control voltage/amperage input/output. The only outboard manufacturer out there that has approved the use of lithium batteries is Mercury. Funny thing is they were the most adamant against the use of lithium until their parent company Brunswick Marine purchased ReLion Lithium.

So, I’m assuming that since my boat/ motor is 25 years old, it’s not recommended to run a lithium cranking battery?

I've been very pleased with my Ionic's. 3 - 50AH for TM, 1 - 125 AH for all else.
Call Andy at Drewcraft for accurate information.
