The statins thread got me thinking.
All you olds should go get a Calcium CT scan done. If you have insurance there are like 80 bucks out of pocket. Very cheap to find out how much if any blockage you have.
At 42 I had one done this year and the doc said I had zero signs of any blockage. I got a score of 0 (which is what you want). He said I have the heart of a 20-year-old.
My cousin who is 43 had a heart attack last year and another 75% blockage this year. He's lucky to have survived the heart attack.

My cholesterol has always ran a little high like everyone in my family lineage. However zero heart attacks so when my PCP suggested I get on a lose dose statin I balked and he said well let’s at least do the CT Calcium score test which I also scored a 0. Needless to say since I am 69 with that score PCP determined no need for a statin after all.

I scored low, but had a small amount of blockage in each part, so doc wants to check me out more

Good pre-problem study and no MD order required. $75 here, just call a CT scan dept and check what they want for a cash price.

I paid $50 in 2018 and my score was nearly 2000. A friend of mine had a nearly identical score and had for bypasses the next day. Mine was determined to be distributed plaque and my cardiologist put me on meds to drop my LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. My blood tests had showed "high normal" LDL for years and my GP wasn't concerned. $50 well spent

My younger brother's GP used to be a cardiologist. My brother was showing no symptoms of any kind but his GP wanted him to get a calcium CT scan. His score was over 2000. They tried stints but the blockage was to bad so he ended up having a quad bypass at age 66. The test is easy. Get it done.

Scan is done by radiology technologists (X Ray Dept.) but has to be ordered by your doctor or specialist.

GF and I had ours done on Heart Health Day for $40.00, no Dr referral needed. She scored a 0, mine wasn't terrible scary but did tell the tale of a lifetime of fish frys and barbecues.

It is a CT Scan, and is done in the CT Dept. Takes longer to check in then do the actual scan. I have done hundreds of them. Very neat scan. It shows calcifications of the blood vessels of the heart. You really need to combine it with an Echocardiogram(ultrasound of the heart) to look for softer/pending blockages and valve function. The next step after that would be the CTA Heart with the contrast media to have a complete heart diagnostic check.
I had all 3 done a few months ago for some irregular heart rhythms (PVC's). I had to stop one medication I was taking to fix that issue. Scared the hell outta me.

I had an Echo cardiogram back in Feb. I had some PVCs as well so I wore the ZIO patch monitor for 2 weeks. The cardiologist said the echo cardiogram was good, other than some normal calcification / aging (I'm 71). If the echocardiogram result is good as characterized by a Cardiologist, would I still need the CT scan?

A CT scan outside of an absolute emergency situation.... I'll pass on unnecessary radiation going through my body 10 times out of 10 but thanks.

My family has a history of high cholesterol. Mine was high too, Dr wanted me to take statins, told him I wanted the calcium score test first. Told him if it was high I would take them, if not I wouldn’t. Took the test and came back 0. Changed my diet and lowered my cholesterol by 50 points. I’m not taking the meds. Worth the $ for the peace of mind.
