Haha, I didn’t actually, but now I see what’s going on.

He’s faking it until he makes it. Good pro staff strategy.

Maybe it was Ken A that once spoke of a guide trick of using fishing line attached to the scale and pulling down on it to make a fish "weigh" more. Just as the girls get prettier at closing time the fish get bigger with the telling of the tale!

My fishing buddy told me to weigh a 5lb bag of sugar. I had one weighed on a good scale, and measured it with my two scales. One was about .1lb high the other was very low. The only way to verify a scale is to measure weights from 1lb to 15lb and verify it's linear. I have had two that were good on low weights, but gave erratic values when weighing heavier weights. If you drop an electronic scale on something hard it can throw it off. I would teat your scale on something that you know what the actual weight is. I look at the size of the mouth in relationships to the hands, and if you long arm it all bets are off. No way to see how big it is if your long arming a fish to try and make it look bigger. Your holding it right and it's easy to see the fish in relation to your body.

Your buddy is a big dude, so fish will look smaller in photos.
With one of my scales, if I don't hold it perfectly vertical....it can add up to about a pound and a half.......I learned this on a very sunny day, when I had to tilt the scale to shade my eyes so I could read the display.

Yep, not about to open the hatch, the waterproof bag, then the padded scale bag over that fish.

I carry a certified scale, trophy fish measuring board and flexible tape. We dont get all of it out, wet and fishy for no reason. Its a great day, and somebody just caught a trophy fish when all that stuff gets pulled out.

I bet he had the scale upside down. No way that's a 9. Sorry man.

I've seen the length photo of this fish also and it is 22 inches long with the mouth open, so probably closer to 21" with the proper measurement. It definitely doesn't seem to have the girth needed to push 9 pounds with only being ~21.5 inches long...Some of those Bois D'arc fish are obese and will be that heavy while being short, but this one doesn't seem to look right.
