My grandma would eat them. I liked fried squirrel and squirrel dumplings. My folks and grandfolks also ate calf brains and scrambled eggs, I pass on eating any brains.

My buddy's mom (that served the brains) used to rag on me for headshooting them with a .22; said I was ruining the best part of the squirrel. So I took a shotgun up that weekend to hunt 'em like they did. Bad mistake..........

Grew up in TN. We killed our own hogs every year. Brains and eggs the next morning was a delicacy. Big no on squirrels though

I don't remember a squirrel that wasn't a pain to skin. Trying to keep the entire carcass in one piece. Vicegrips hung by a string. Cedar tree. I've eaten my fair share. It's a white meat. Any recipe for chicken, I tried with squirrel.
It's true, it's excellent with a gravy. It's an all organic, shot free, free range, tree rat.
Never once did I ever think of cracking it's head open. I'm guessing it'd be like cracking a thick egg(?). Having to dig the brain out. You have to be really into, 'exotic meat' to do all that.

Fortunately, for me, I have never been that poor, or, hungry. And I hope and pray I never am.

Squirrels have brains? With all the ways I see them tempting death in my neighborhood, I woulda never thunk it

Skinning is no problem. I could gut and skin 10 squirrels in less than 30 minutes. Don't know about vice-grips and such. Never used anything but an Old Timer.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !
