It is sad and unfortunate but we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We are "growing the sport" which means putting more and more inexperienced individuals on the water in bass boats that run 75+ MPH. Things like this will become more and more frequent I am afraid. So how would limit the sport ? this is a sad thing for every body involved. Man I really have no idea. I am not sure you can fix this without a major intervention from the government (which none of us want). You just sort of rely on the common sense of others I am afraid.

Fast boats have been around for decades. It’s the Indian not the arrow and there are a lot of dumb Indians out there. I 100% agree that it is the operator and not the vessel. Absolutely.

Boaters like we have now have not been around for decades. Watch how people drive vehicles today as you go home from work, kinda scary isn’t it, phones and other distractions that have people’s attention. And let’s don’t leave out just plain bad drivers. Now add in a boat that will run 70+ with no brakes. Kids 16 to senior citizens, all you have to do is be able to make the payment or have parents that will. No I don’t blame the boat I blame the boaters or whoever’s furnishing them the boat. This is correct. Never has there been a time where fishing was as popular as it is now with a wider range of age groups with access to boats who fish competitively. The more people you have fishing, the more likely you are to experience accidents like this. It's simple math really. Prayers for the families affected.

Smith is notorious for patchy fog. Been there done that on Smith. Can be clear as a bell at takeoff and then you can't see your trolling motor 1/2 mile up the lake. Sadly most tournament guys just send it and hope for the best. I don't envy the calls these TD's have to make. Sadly many of us tournament anglers force the TD's to manage these tournaments like they are dealing with a bunch of children.

Phones and touch screens to operate everything in a car are major distractions. Add to that just a bunch of bad drivers and I decided it wasn’t worth the risk anymore.

Tournament Bass fisherman are crybabies with poor judgment and no etiquette. That is a bad combination.

We saw some major changes after the Big O drowning. This will 100% changes the scope for "Pro" tournament bass fishing, at least at these minor league levels with large fields. Maybe we will see a field cap or a reduction. We will definitely see more cancellations, which we are seeing more than ever before right now. I go back to "grow the sport", this is what you get. More people who only care about winning, more accidents, more restrictions. They are coming.

Fishing is not supposed to be a dangerous hobby, but some guys are impatient and take unnecessary risks. I've rarely seen a boating accident where it was deemed unavoidable. We had a club member die in a boating accident about 8 years ago and they couldn't reach his wife and kids, and they showed up to the weigh in. Watching the officer tell her changed my life forever. I will never put my family or anyone else's through that just to get to my fishing spot a little faster.

As much as people will throw shade at the tournament angler and his speed, the guide sitting still in the middle of the interstate on a foggy morning is just as responsible for not assuming something like that could happen. When in doubt, head to the shoreline, even doing that presents a risk.

I was fishing a tourney on Kissimmee when the same thing happened - maybe 100 yards from us (but couldn't see because of the fog) - shiner fishing guide boat sitting still was T-boned by a tourney boat following his GPS in the fog. Thankfully no fatalities there. Truly a sad deal.
