I want to get into some small, local Bass tournaments for fun this year. I was wondering what do successful tournament fishermen do differently than a fun fisher. For example, as a fun fisher I may spend too much time in an area before moving on or trying a new bait. Or if I find a big fish, I may only throw at it a couple of time, will a tourney guy sit on that potential winning fish? Any tips appreciated. Yes, I have FFS....

For me, tournament fishing was never about "fun", it was a challenge that was fun only when I won money. To be consistantly successful takes real work and a willingness to do things you would never do when "fun" fishing, such as sitting on a ledge for 6 hours making the same cast over and over again, knowing that every hour or two some bigs will pull up and bite. My last tournament was in 2004 so I am sure I would approach it very differently now with FFS, but it would still be about putting in the work to get the fun of taking other peoples money. Or you can just be a donator, but try to get your money worth by watching and learning what the consistant winners are doing, which is really what Bass Club tournaments are about. YMMV

Can you drop 30 on a scale at any given time? If not, you need more practice with the scope.
Everything else you asked about is situational and you end up developing a gut feeling on what you should do and when to do it.
Sometimes your gut will lead you the wrong direction, only to arrive at weigh-in and realize that someone was much better with the scope than you were.

Best thing you can take from getting beat is learn from your day on the water is what will make you a better angler. Always remember it’s you against the fish, enjoy your day on the water and have fun.

Fish every cast or flip expecting to get bit by a 5 pounder.

One of the main differences in the successful tournament angler's and others is time on the water. The successful tournament angler often spends all their weekends on the lake and often days during the week. If they have a full time job then they spend so much time on the water that they end up going through one or more divorces over time. They miss a lot of their kids games in whatever sport they play while their kids are growing up because they cannot afford to lose the points in their local weekend circuit that they would lose if they skipped a tournament. They then have to take out of the 401K so they can afford a better, bigger boat with all the electronics. Every once in a while because of a fall championship they miss family events but they still make time for hunting season. To get better all you have to do is put yourself first over family, take off as many days as you can from work, and then spend all your time and money on the lake.

This is a guy you want to listen to. He has won a lot more than most.

There is only one way to success in tournaments these days. Forget everything you ever learned and focus on FFS. Master it and you’ll be ok. If you don’t, you’ll just be donating every week.

I don't fish tournaments because I think I would hate it honestly. I fish during the week because I hate dealing with crowds. Tournaments just make the lake way too crowded for me. I just fish against the fish and not other anglers.

I think it depends on what you are looking to get out of Tournament fishing. I have had different motivations at different times in my life. At first, it was just for the added excitement that comes from catching fish during competition, as well as the fun of hanging out after and drining a beer or 2 with friends or other guys who fished and shooting the sh!t. Then I went through a competitive phase where I did a lot of prefishing and if I didnt win or place high in the money I was upset. Now I am back to fishing for the fun of competition and that extra excitement. Really trying to win puts so much pressure on that if you have a bad day, your weekend is ruined, and you spent a lot of time and money just to add to your misery. Determine what you want to get out of fishing tournaments, and act accordingly.

I fish them for the adrenaline rush... There was nothing like walking out of the locker room and rushing onto the field... Mashing the hotfoot and running to the first spot in the next best thing... Dan

If you want to have fun, go fun fishing, lol.

Fish for bigger bites, try to win and not try to catch 5 that weigh 10 pounds (unless on Fork) just toi say "I have a limit"

Maximize the typical bite windows

If you really want to compete, learn to use and maximize FFS
