As a property and casualty insurance adjuster for 15 years and a roofing company owner for 8 years, I've witnessed firsthand how many scam artists and fly-by-night roofers are out there. It’s outrageous that you need a license to cut hair or do nails—things that grow back—but anyone can peel open a roof without any regulation! It’s time to act with HB 3344, which would establish a State Roofing License in Texas to protect homeowners and hold bad contractors accountable. Please take just 2 minutes to show your support! Here’s how: 1️⃣ Click this link: https://hubs.ly/Q03h5bl10 2️⃣ Fill out your information 3️⃣ Scroll to HB 3344 by Curry 4️⃣ Click “SELECT” and submit your support comment Your voice matters! Let’s clean up this industry and protect Texans from scams and fraud!

Good effort. Scammers suck. Next some consideration for "foundation" companies. Too many jack-leg companies in that field as well. Matter of fact, time to change building codes to have piers to bedrock before the foundation is poured. Building on expansive clay is assinine.

About 11 years ago a contractor was busted for not finishing a roof.
He got 10years. His old store front is still there. Everyone knows if you rip people off on home construction. The Bell County DA is going to eat you alive. There's people shooting other people and they get less time then a contractor not finishing the job.
So how is this Bill gonna help?

Nearly every home in my neighborhood has serious foundation issues. While I support limited government, Texas feels like the Wild West when it comes to many professional trades. There are just too many scam artists and half [censored] work being done.

Raises hand*
Who's idea was it to build on soft field land? Housing developments on land that's been plowed for a hundred years. Pouring foundations on powdered sugar.

So how is this Bill gonna help? This bill aims to create a licensing system that would help hold contractors accountable from the start. By requiring licenses, it would be easier to track and penalize those who don’t meet professional standards. It also sets the stage for potential repercussions, making it more difficult for scam artists to operate in the long run. The trend for a lot of these scam artists are to chase storms, offer to eat the insurance deductible, take shortcuts on the roof and then shut that company down so they can’t be sued and then open a new company. This bill would help to prevent that kind of fraud.

I'm not seeing the criminality needed for yet another tax vacuum. Everyone knows you're going to jail if you cheat a home owner. How's a tax going to reinforce that?

Roofing is definitely one of the most predatory trades of the construction industry. I would think roofers would welcome this to reduce the fly-by-night companies low balling jobs and giving roofers a bad rep.

My business primarily focuses on storm restoration, and this segment is plagued with scam artists who "cover the deductible," commit insurance fraud, and do shoddy work. They often shut down one company and start another, making it tough for honest storm restoration professionals to compete with integrity. This is ruining the business, as most homeowners don’t understand how an insurance claim works and get tricked into these scams, ultimately screwing themselves. We need accountability in this industry!
As for concerns about increased taxes, I don’t see how this would happen. The fines imposed on dishonest contractors would hopefully more than cover the costs of the regulations.

Just hire a local contractor with a good reputation It is seriously that simple I would never hire a door knocker to replace my roof.

Yep, but the real blame is on the builders/developers who put [censored] foundations on this black gumbo soil and never take into consideration the long term problems they are passing on. I've probably repaired 25 -30 foundations on flip houses/rentals and it's just a crapshoot if they actually work or not. That said, big name or not, there's crooks in all size of companies, and just because they are "licensed" doesn't make them good...or bad. Do your homework.
