We headed out in the dark to round up some live threadfin shad. Aohe Trader and I hit a shallow bank with the wind blowing into shore. We worked a bit and came up with a couple hundred shad. With shad in the tank we headed up lake to an area that holds fish when the shad are spawning. Like magic we found fish in 28 feet of water and turned on the thumper. The fish responded and we caught about 50 fish until the wind died. We caught a 6# and a 7# hybrid that we released. We moved around in several areas but with slack wind our action was slow. When the wind came back up and the fish became active again. We moved to the main lake and found a big school of active fish. I switched over to a MAL lure and caught about 20 fish on lures. We gave up when we got to 105 fish. We had 9 hybrids with 4 keepers, 4 black bass with 2ea. 16" smallmouth, 3 good catfish, and the rest were whites of all sizes. Most fish were released except for some whites that died getting the live bait hooks out. It has been a while that we caught over a hundred fish on our own. The fish seemed to be where I thought they should be and as long as the wind blew, action was good. I hope this is just the beginning of a great spring season.

Nice Report, I hope to get out there about the middle of May when my son is out of school. When does the shad spawn normally end out there? I usually have to go up one of the creeks to catch shad and it would be nice to be able to just catch them on a wind blown bank.

At this water temp rate increase, barring a cold front I'd say shad spawn will be done in 2-3 weeks.

Based on 34 years of data, the shad spawn will typically peak in the first two weeks of May, then quickly taper to nil by the last week of May. It is really just starting to become consistent, so there is plenty of spawning yet to go!
