The reel is the most important component. I run Shimano Sustains - I use the 4000 series .. their 24 lbs of drag lets you set the drag exactly where you want/need it. Yes, they are a little big, but they handle big fish so much better. I have a couple of Sustain 2500s that I use for strolling and jig and minnow presentations. 20 lbs of drag on those. I just don't think 12 and 15-lb drag settings work as well with big fish.

Well hell! I was gonna 100% recommend a Falcon Lowrider “Shakyhead” spinning rod. I have a few of them, because I like them and they are absolutely a steal at $129.

The Daiwa reel is a good choice, but I think a 3000 size is a little better for bass fishing a senko. The slightly larger spool seems to have a little smoother drag and better line management.

Either way….slingin’ senkos on a spinner is a blast! I have caught a few DD bass with it last year. Skipping docks is a lot of fun.

Make sure you use 20lb braid to a 12lb leader. Which type of leader is personal preference. I like INVISX. But some docks have rusty pilings and maybe ABRAZX might be better.

Also, you should try Berkley Fusion weighted wacky hooks (1/16th). Hook the senko exactly behind the “egg sack” and it will drive those fish nuts!

Welcome to the “DEI” of bass fishing. I love my spinners with their bright pink braid!

Steez, where can I pick up a Falcon shaky head rod local to the metroplex?

Over the past ten years, I've purchased more salt water spinning reels......they tend to be better made than their freshwater counterparts with higher drag ratings on average.

A few years back, there was a really good deal on the Penn Battle 3DX spinning reels, so I bought four of them......two in the 2500 size and I use one on my spinning senko rod.
Thoroughly enjoy using this reel.

Currently at a good price on Amazon.

I have both an 872s and 852s NRX+ and both are a little stiff for weightless wacky. A little softer tip gives you more carry and will skip much better.

Actually I have a NRX+842 which works even better but its currently rigged with a jighead and minnow

Another saltwater spinning reel I like a lot is the Daiwa BG. The 2500 BG has a slightly higher max drag rating......but maybe not quite as buttery smooth as the Penn Battle3 DX

Watch any redfish tournament and I'd say 90% of them are fishing with spinning gear. The average redfish fights much harder pound for pound than a large or small mouth bass. The drag systems on a spinning reel are much better; thus, better suited for more finesse presentations like a weightless wacky with a smaller hook and lighter line. Agree with using a baitcaster pitching around heavy cover and for big swimbaits when wrenching them in becomes the priority.

I throw light cranks like the shad rap on spinning gear. So much easier to launch lighter lures with a spinning set up; especially into the wind.

The Dobyns Champion 683 is a great rod. I like shorter for skipping around docks. I'm not a fan of Shimano baitcasters but the Stradic is a great spinning reel

When I use spinning reels, yes I use them some times, I use the following:

Daiwa Caladia 4000 / Megabass Whip Snake
Daiwa Ballistic 3000 / Megabass Enforcer
Shimano Vanford (sold this recently as it was just sitting taking up space.)

I like the larger spool / arbor as they manage the wind more and allow for longer casting.

I have the NRX+ version. One of these days I'll pick up the Conquest. I think the MBR actions are more versatile then the JWR's

I'm toying between the 842 and 822 to try for a wacky set up. . I think the NRX+ with the spiral wrap is just a little stiffer than the previous NRX. I'm using a pair of Kyle Hall Full Send rods 7'1" Med - fast for whacky ... great feel and I can flat send a weightless bait a country mile if I need to. Deadly accurate skipping is super tight places. I went with the Exprides for my jig and minnow with 2500 Sustains. love the tips for that presentation.

My 872 and 852 are ned rig, shake head and underspins for now.
