I want one. Nothing says redneck better than a six foot long, 3 1/2 ft tall, 150 lb wolf riding in the back of my truck. Breed him down to a huge short legged Dachshund. Then name him, "Propane Tank". lol

Well the Dire wolves the kids had in Game of Thrones were the Bomb!

This is a sensationalized non-story. They just tweaked a few genes to make some gray wolves white and bigger. They are still like 99% gray wolf. I think you are wildly underestimating what's been done here. If it looks like a duck. Walks like a duck. Talks like a duck. Is it not a duck? These absolutely look like, walk like, talk like Dire Wolves. They took real Dire Wolf DNA figured out how it was different from gray wolves then modified the gray wolf DNA to create an animal that appears and behaves like a real Dire Wolf. They can modify specific genes down to the nucleotide level. They changed more genes in these animals than has ever been done before. The only reason it's not a 100% match to a real Dire Wolf is because they don't have a 100% complete DNA sequence of them. So, at the end of day this comes down to a philosophical question. What matters most? 100% match of DNA or the fact it looks like, walks like, and talks like a duck? One final thought before you answer... Humans and Chimps share 98.8% of their DNA. But only .5% of that 1.2% difference actually matters. Said differently, if you took a chimp and changed the right things, you'd only need to change .006% of the chimps DNA to make something that looked like, talked like, and acted like a human. They could breed with humans and you would not be able to tell one from any other human. Yet it would still technically be 1.0194% different genetically from a human.

Why do people want to mess with carp like this... People messing with carp like this fuels virtually all of modern existence. Let's also not forget humans are the reason for a lot of recent extinction, possibly even the dire wolf.

Do you know why we were able to breed domestic dogs to have such wildly varying physical traits while still being the same species? And yes they are all the same species, Canis Lupus Familiaris. If all you are claiming is that they “look” like dire wolves, then sure, they do… maybe. But claiming they are actually dire wolves is greater claim that requires greater evidence. How many dire wolves have you seen to claim that these things look like dire wolves?

JPurdue, is it your position that we have resurrected an extinct species?
