turkey season in full swing around here -here's how i killed one...

never turkey hunted before because I was always fishing someplace during turkey season but i did kill a turkey once......back in the late 60's/early 70's a buddy and i were duck hunting/beer drinking one afternoon in lake Beulah (oxbow lake just off Miss. river north of Greenville,Ms.)......not even sure there was an open season on turkeys back then....it was almost dark and several turkeys started flying over us to roost in trees at edge of lake...my buddy and I both shot one, mine fell out in the lake and my lab jumped in to retrieve it...Spook was experienced retriever but had never tried to retrieve a duck that big,...water was real shallow and he finally figured out how to grab turkey by the neck and half swim and half drag it back to the boat.....
my buddy's turkey fell back in woods behind us and Spook headed back there to help my buddy find and retrieve it...
next thing I hear is Spook barking, growling and a flapping of wings then finally another shot...wish I had seen it,my buddy said it was helluva fight until he finally grabbed spook's collar and drug him back enough to blow turkeys head off...

we get home that night,it's cold and raining, didn't have a garage or carport and only place to pluck/clean these turkeys was in my wife's kitchen.....as you can imagine there was some unhappiness over this (that lasted several months) but the wild turkey smoked over the grill was best I can remember ever having...

Nothing beats a wild turkey. It's a bird Mother Nature said screw it. We already have buzzards. Lets have something a little less rugged and name it Turkey.

Never mind that the thing would eat your dead body and everything else slower then it. And believe it or not, it's not scared of fire. So no need to try and cremate things. They'll still pick it out the fire.

It's a wild turkey. A raptor through and through. We had turkeys growing up. I've experienced them in later life. I've dispatched a few myself. I've ate everything that walks and partially scoots along the ground. But I've never eaten a wild turkey.

Good Shot on the bird.

I hunted turkeys a lot in my younger days. I got pretty good with a Turkey Call and have called up a lot during my hunts. I had several box calls. We would cook them on an open pit and also would smoke them. Great memories for sure. thumb

My hardest game has been buck jackrabbit. Unless you have dogs and miles of flat land. He'll disappear like a ghost. The turkeys were taken as side game. Stalk and shoot. I've never set up next to a tree or used a call. I have shot a 12gauge with my back against a big oak tree.

I've been looking at hog hunts. The ones that provide everything but the gun. Three days of luxury, Rolling wild pig.
