 Throttle only mode, missing

I’m baffled or stupid, maybe both. When in throttle only mode on my mercury verado 175, low RPM runs fine, go higher and it sounds like it’s missing. Regular mode runs no issues. Want to get out soon, so concerned I’m putting myself in a bad sitt

It has a rev limiter in neutral so the inside parts don’t become outside parts
