 Trailer tongue hinge question

I have a 1542 Alweld Jon boat with a steel trailer. The length of the tongue has always been an issue, so I added a swing away joint (Fulton). I added 5-feet to the tongue and now it seems about perfect. I have seen some videos where they recommend running the safety chain back to the original trailer. That's a long chain run and would seem to me to be unsafe if the trailer came uncoupled. Is there any real reason to not just run the chain behind the coupler as usual? It's not like I'm pulling a 25 ft fiberglass center console.
Thoughts?

From what I have always been told, safety chains are supposed to prevent a trailer from hitting the ground in the event of the hitch failing. That is also why they need to be crossed.
That is the way I have always installed them but thankfully I have never has one come loose from the hitch.

From what I have always been told, safety chains are supposed to prevent a trailer from hitting the ground in the event of the hitch failing. That is also why they need to be crossed.
That is the way I have always installed them but thankfully I have never has one come loose from the hitch. Now do you “cross” the safety cables when they both start at the same spot under the trailer tongue?

Crossing the chains or cables creates a cradle effect for the coupler in the event of a disconnect/failure.

Or remount mount the chains in a better location.
