Our first home computer was a TRS 80 with the cassette player to load data. I remember the cassette player to be somewhat it or miss.
I started my business on an IBM System 34. When I replaced it with PC's, I can still remember the IBM salesman saying incredulously "You're going to trust your business to a PC??" He was really unhappy about losing his commission.

My parents got me a Commodore 64 for my birthday, I want to say I was like 12 or so. I was so pissed off for weeks, in reality my dad bought it for himself and decided to kill two birds with one stone.

I had a Tandy from Radio Shack. It didn't have a monitor, I had to plug it into a TV.

Working for CDC (Control Data Corp) in the early 80s was a mainframe company but I was in the IBM plug compatible area, maintaining a corporate data center near UTD-Dallas, I bought a 'clone' from Dr.PC on Belt Line Rd. in Richardson. I proceeded to learn MS-DOS, then I used PC-File to build a database in the field to track headcrashes on CDC 33502 disk drives' head/disk assemblies.. Corporate CDC poo-pood my use of the PC, said they had all the data they needed. 6 months later I was nominated for and won the "Shark" award for submitting the data to the MPI division of CDC - which they adopted to rewrite the microcode to "jog" the r/w heads more often thereby distributing the head-to-platter lubricant more frequently. Got me a weekend in Minneapolis for the awards ceremony and then a 3-day junket to Jamaica for a . . . . . . . .
A long time ago in a land far away, I had my moment of fame, now I'm a dinosaur waiting for the comet.......
Fork' em all...... I'm happy where I am today. . . . .Fat, Dumb and Happy.
I also worked on CDC computers back in the 80's, (80-84) at the Data Center for Mobil Oil in Dallas. This was my first computer job while working through college. We got one of the first Cray computers around 1983. The 9-track tapes (background) were the main storage solution and Mobil had 4 buildings full of those type reel tapes for processing seismic data. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-45380-263164-cyber_170.jpg)

My first taste of the internet wasn’t a computer, but WebTv. Would tie up the phone line whenever you turned it on

my first experience with a computer was in 1980 with EDS, test division in Plano.. they had some big mofos.. remember something about JES. cant remember much other than having to crank them up with a big batch of cards... programmers from all over the world would test their programs .. my job was to learn who to call to fix stuff when things didnt work .. later went to corporate and worked in tape library.. I can still hear the sound ot those things popping up. use an old Toshiba laptop now.

Atari at home, got work to get TRS 80 machines and moved a lot of the programs from punch cards to the TRS80, made the job much more efficient even then....

Can't remember the brand, but it was a 386 processor. I ordered it with the largest disk drive available, 10mb. Told myself I would never need that much disk space. Best part was a 1200 baud modem that allowed me to use AOL to access the mainframe at the hospital. Before that when you got called for a problem, you had to drive to work and fix it. And it seems all those calls came at 2am.
