I recently saw a Kieth Warren show where he had been catching triple tail down in the Matagorda system. I was wondering if anyone has caught any of these bruisers around the Galveston area..East bays gas wells? Trinity? North jetty?

i believe lots of the bigger ones are caught around floating debris.

Seems like I remebmer seeing some data on triple tail catches that showed the Matatorda bay system had several times more triple tail catches than any other Texas bay. But I would suspect that some number would be present. I've caught some mainly by accident in Espirto Santa which is adjacent to Matagorda.
I thought it was interesting how the guide on the tv program did full throttle reverse to pull the fish away from cover. In my experience, triple tails usually run to the structure or in the case of a gas well through the well and out the other side for about 40 yrds. It makes it kind of difficult to land.

Thats why you got to use that boat to your advantage. Also, it would probably be good to use a very heavy lb test braided line and a stick with a little backbone.

Llama, tripletails are in for summers only, I think.
LooptyLoop, I think the reverse would deposit most the guys I fish with in the bay, but it would have to help the landing percentages. I usually use braid but I caught my biggest on 10 lb mono. The fish ran dead away from the well and into the open bay.
I bet a similar technique could be used for sheephead. I saw some large ones in Matagorda two weeks ago.

ive never seen them in galveston. i have caught them on the short rigs out of sabine though. some great eating if u can get them away from the dang rig. they usually suspend from 1-5 ft down really tight around the legs and pipes of small platforms. they are very aggressive and i have never seen one that would not bite.

I have caught them in calcasieu and around the bouys. they are a blast on lite fly gear and light spinning gear. Use a small white clouser or shrimp pattern with fly, for spinning gear I use a small bait shrump and small split shot wieght.

I caught one in early July off the rocks at the of the Dike. We had the lights set up that night. I saw what looked like a bag floating by in the water on an out-going tide, which on better inspection turned out to be a 18.5" trip tail. I caught him on a Gulp 3" skrimp.

They are there! We slammed them a couple of years ago after a big storm. Almost every piece of debris in the water had them nearby! Good Luck. One of my favorite fish in the sea!

I've seen some caught off the 61st street pier several years back.
