Reading news now. That seems pretty crazy that he could have alzheimers and not know his wife had passed. Maybe they stayed in opposite sides of the house and never spoke?

Usually when people die and there are dogs in the house, the dogs end up having to eat parts of the owners to survive. The dog that died may have died from malnutrition from a broken heart or possibly eaten one of the pills on the ground.
The dogs that lived may have chosen survival.

Maybe she was a gardener.

Alzheimer's is a very cruel disease. However, they are saying he died 9 days later based on his pacemaker. He could have just as easily fallen trying to get help and was not able to get up again and lingered for days. The dog died due to starvation/lack of water. It was in a kennel due to a procedure a few days earlier. The dog was brought home the day they believe Gene Hackman's wife died.

If he'd been down unable to get up his blood woulda shown signs of rhabdomyolysis.
