I pull my lemon and lime trees in the garage over the winter and keep them under a grow light. You can get grow lights on Amazon for dirt cheap.

I’m not a fan of oasis horticubes. Lost 104 or so plants. The germ rate was fantastic but they started falling back well before first true leaves. Impossible for me to figure out if to wet,to dry. I hit them with miracle gro transplant formula but not looking good. They do have true leaves at around 2” but they curl and sag so much that I will call them ruined.

I have used rockwool and peat in past without such problems so will be going back to them. I will steal in ground seedlings and wash roots for hydro plants this year. I start in ground seeds in pro mix bx.

You don’t need to tell me how crappy my grow lights are, I’m aware. Their main purpose is not for seed starting, I’m just experimenting.

Also got my aquaponic snap pea experiment going. There’s gravel under that soil, just used a tiny bit of soil on top to start the seeds. So far so good not counting the lean to that middle pod.

I got a venus fly trap that I'm enjoying. Haven't fed it yet. Never knew they were native to the US (Carolinas). Enjoying learning about it and I hope it goes well.

No need to feed them . Set them in light shade during warm weather or near a fruit bowl ( fruit flies ) . When a trap feeds it dies .

Distilled or rainwater only . Tap usually has unwanted minerals that could cause the plant to quit producing traps .

Need a dormant period during the winter .

Search for Black Jungle carnivorous plants site .

Thanks dude. Didn't know the traps die when they feed.

I know they don't NEED to feed but it sounds like they grow faster when they do.

True but the problem is people tend to get carried away with hand feeding . "Hey dude . Wanna see something cool ? "

I used to have a volitans lionfish that would eat a dozen goldfish at a time . Very entertaining for my guests but not good for the fish . wink

Yeah, I mean, everyone knows that lionfish prefer gazellefish over goldfish.

I I have heard my entire life that cotyledons don’t need fertilizer. First time I have used oasis horticubes and I will tell you that they are completely inert. Seedlings do need fertilizer in them. I picked up some miracle gro transplant fertilizer and mixed it half strength, wow. 300 sick tomato plants just perked up and now true leaves. I’m bottom watering brassicas, peppers, and wife’s flowers and they are loving it! Starting in ground stuff tomorrow and plan on using it at first sign of germination.

Actually peppers, flowers and brassicas are already doing well with it so it’s not like I’m risking a lot.

Not familiar with them. Looking at their site they should have them.

There’s one 10 minutes from my place which is why I asked.

How do these seeds look? I’ve never grown kale before nor have I ever used rockwool cubes before. These will be grown in an aquaponic system I’m incorporating into my koi pond filter similar to the snap peas above. I just put about a teaspoon or so of seed starting soil on top of the rockwool cubes for the seeds to get going. Whatcha think? Will it work?
