Well Amigos, This summer the fam and I are packing up and heading for a new adventure in Los Alamos New Mexico. I am overjoyed and excited about all the outdoor activities I will get to do with my family, and the fly fishing...it's going to be great. It will be the perfect place for my kids to grow up. What an adventure it will be! We are looking forward to exploring ruins, the Santa Fe Natl Forest, the Jemez Mountains, Valles Caldera, skiing and making trips to Southern Colorado too. The San Juan River will be easily reachable for regular weekend trips and will be my new home tailwater, I'm looking forward to sharing my fishing adventures with yall and keeping you updated on the fishing on the San Juan. Tight lines .

I always hate to lose a Texas angler, but it sounds like you have a great plan. I canโt wait to see some of those great river fishing pictures.

All things Texas considered, a brilliant move! Yessir. Another big motivator for us with 3 young kids , FREE IN state COLLEGE for all NM HS graduates. I've been reading the book Flyfishing Northern New Mexico and fall asleep at night dreaming about wet wading those streams this summer.

My parents retired there 8 years ago, In Santa Fe, both from that area. Been to almost all things you have listed, we always found hiking trails when we went up there. We regularly Ski Red River.
Beautiful area.

The Juan is awesome. Best first suggestion: buy a mess of tiny hooks (22-26) from Allen hooks. Second suggestion: learn to tie the Yong Special...thread midge. Third: get some good eye ware...polarized and magnified for tying in those tiny flies.

My go to was a 22 disco midge in the evening and a24 rs2 during most of the day, both below an egg. I have a bunch of midge patterns tied down to 30, but if they are eating 20 or 22 I will fish those first. There should be some baetis coming off and I read that leeches have been fishing well lately also. It took a few day of catching a ton of rainbows to figure out the browns, but when I did I was able to get into a bunch of 17 and 18 inch fish. I lost several 20+ inch fish, I'm hoping to seal the deal on a big brown this time.

I do like to toss an olive marabou leech at low light, but I change to a stout leader as they will slam a swimming leech too hard for fine tippet.
