Benbrook is full of them but that’s the furthest west ive ever caught the things. It’s in the trinity basin though, so that matters. As far as I know they’re not really found west of Fort Worth. They seem to be thick in every lake east of the metroplex, lavon and Hubbard are overrun with them, they run up the creeks with the sandbass and at times it can be hard to get past them. However, I’ve never seen nor heard of one being caught in ray roberts, Lewisville, or texoma. Are they absent from those lakes? I’d think one would pop up when I’ve been creek fishing.

Alot of folks just toss them when they are caught but not me. I find them to be EXCELLENT table fare! Lake Fork has them in the 1 1/2 lb neighborhood.

Yellow bass are excellent table fare. While not as large as SB, they are usually very aggressive little fish.

gborg If you ever happened to catch a mess of 10"ers try half of em grilled or smoked instead of fried. Most folks are afraid of them and their cousins(White Bass /Hybrids stripers) because of the nasty Red Blood line but I`ve found that by bleeding them out while @ the lake in the lake water that problem becomes nonexistent by the time I reach home Bleed em out Guys!! Here`s the formula: Catch fish +clip just 1 gill + add to stringer = white meat.Cliping just one gill is the secret.

I have not seen them in the Brazos lakes yet. But the pipelines spread them big time. lake Waco has them too.

I’m not arguing that. I wouldn’t feed a sandbass or striper to my dog, but yellows are great. I just was curious of their whereabouts.

Have not ever caught any in Grapevine. First time I saw one was in Tawakoni, and I thought it was a small sandbass.

The prep for Stripes, Hybrids and white bass are key. We underscore this procedure at least once a year ! I make two cuts for white bass and virtually have zero red meat. Stripes and Hybrids due to their size require some additional prep in removing most of the red meat. Soaking in sea salt will remove the fishy taste hereby making said filets good table fare !!

Yellow Bass have relatively clear flesh and support good eating. Lake W'ford has them in large numbers, however few reach 6 inches.

I have fished Lake Palestine for 40 years , lived on the lake for 25 years. Never caught a yellow bass until a couple of years back.
Never more than one or two during a day of crappie fishing. I don't think I have caught one over 6 inches.

We caught many in Grapevine over the years. They are in there.

I caught my 1st yellow bass in 1957 in Houston's water supply canal that runs from Lake Houston to the treatment plant in Galena Park. We didn't know what they were. but they were good eatin. Since then, I learned they were yellow bass and are called bar fish in Louisiana. To my recollection, I have caught them in most Texas lakes I have fished, including Eagle Mountain, Livingston, Cedar Creek, Tawakoni, Fork, Ray Hubbard, RC, Lewisville, Palestine, Lake Worth, and Conroe. I do almost exclusively catch and release, but if I am keeping fish and catch a good-sized yellow bass, I will keep it. IMO they taste better than even crappie. I would add that my family has been eating white bass for decades and love them. We have learned that the 10 to 12 inch fish taste best. In the bigger ones, you can taste the red meat, but remove the red meat, and they taste great.
