I am with the English Man here. I wouldn't hurt them, but I sure as heck would run... and scream...

Nice pic, Bret. I like the way the face is in focus, but most of the rest of the body is slightly blurry. That really draws one's attention to the snake's eyes.

Cool pic, I'm a snake "appreciater", haven't killed one in decades. Trying to raise my kids to appreciate but respect as well.

The first snake isn't in the genus Nerodia (True "Water Snakes"). Definitely a species of Thamnophis ("Garter snake") but can't tell the species/subspecies from that pic. Could be a plains, wandering garter, or even a blackneck. If anyone ever needs a snake ident try this site also... http://www.zo.utexas.edu/research/txherps/ I really do admire you guys having respect for them, seeing as I grew up around the whole "only good snake is a dead one" attitude.

This thread is bringing back a lot of memories. Your slip and slide on the rat snake with the Vespa reminds me of a time when I was a lil kid in Houston and I was riding my bike through a parking lot and I saw a banana peel. I had seen sooo many cartoons of characters slipping on banana peels that I thought I would try and ride over it and see what happened. Next thing I know I am pulling my head out of the storm drain and picking the asphalt pebbles out of the skin on my elbows!

I was chasing a yellow butterfly on my bike once and it did a SUPER tight turn and a very stupedly tryed to match it and I ended up falling off the bike and getting the handle bar pushed in my gut! you could see the handle bar mark on my gut, thats how hard it hit me! I was rolling around on the ground and my mom saw it happen and she whent NUTS!!! And my dad was like "walk it off."

GOOD TIMES, GOOD TIMES!
