In WV we called them Goldens and targeted them when we spotted them in streams.

Actually caught 6, 2nd fish was particularly small and I’m hungry so I threw it back so I could have a bigger one. All 6 caught in about 20 minutes.

These things are so dam delicate. I broke ribs just cleaning them.

How does everyone clean and cook theirs?

I simply take out the gills and gut em. Rinse them out real good with cold water. I normally fry them but my wife is a very, very, good cook and has several ways she prepares Rainbow Trout. She sometimes marinates them for a few hours, and then dips them in some sort of meal that she puts spices in. She either fries or bakes them. I have had fish prepared in many different ways since I got married. They turn out FANTASTIC.

Do the rib and pin bones soften up enough to eat or do you pick through them?

You pick through them. The meat slides off the bones pretty easy. You need to watch out for the very small bones. I have a friend who picks out all of the meat from the fish first, and then eats it. You can make fish tacos that way also. The more you eat Rainbow Trout the better you get picking the meat from the bones. It is fairly easy. I have been eating trout for years and love them.


Side Note: My favorite fish is White Bass, Crappie, and Bluegill.

i just gut them and cook them whole. cut the head off if space is limited in the cooking vessel but it's not necessary.

Easiest way is to just wrap them in foil with seasonings and butter and just bake.

This time I fried them in a thin layer of oil and they turned out great.

P.S. with either cooking method you can just scrape the skin away, no need for scaling or skinning before cooking.

Looks like March 7th will be the last stocking day for the 2024/2025 Stocking Season. There are still plenty of Rainbow Trout all across Texas. Some places could be already fished out, but others may still be holding some nice ones. It has been a lot of fun. Can't wait till next stocking season!

Limited out at the Canyon Trail Race yesterday. It was stocked for the last time this stocking season with 500 fish. Caught 15 using my go to Gold Super Duper Lure. Kept five nice ones for the dinner table. Get em while they last.

Went fishing for some late winter Bluegill and ended up catching just one Bluegill and eight Rainbow Trout. The trout were hold overs from a stocking that took place early January. Fish were caught on worms. Could have caught more, but ran out of worms. Kept five for the dinner table and gave three away to an angler who was not catching anything. I did not have my trout gear. Some stocked areas are still holding plenty of Rainbow Trout across Texas! Get them while you can!
