Anyone added a hook onto their underspin?

Tired of Missing Bites On An Underspin?! Check Out How to Add a Stinger Hook to Your Setup

Curious if anyone has experience relating to how the action is, does the blade even still spin and present cleanly?

I like the idea but seems the action would be destroyed.

Also what are your go to underspin setups.

In our waters, we don't need more hooks to hang up on cover. I haven't missed fish on an underspin when using one.

I had a similar idea about 8-10 years ago using a Road Runner for Crappie fishing and I can tell you the idea wont work because those barrel swivels that are molded into the lead are not meant to bear a load.

My idea was to remove the blade from a Road Runner and run a 12"-18" leader line to a second jig or Road Runner below the top Road Runner. It would have been your typical double jig rig but done in a way that would allow the top Road Runner to look more natural and not tangle as much. For the most part it accomplished the more natural presentation and reduced tangles, BUT after just a few fish the barrel swivel that is molded into the lead would either snap off or the lead around it would wallow out and would pull completely out of the lead.

If a few Crappie can destroy a Road Runner like that then I have to believe that any decent size Bass could do the same with a stinger hook rigged that way. I have abandoned my idea of using under spins in this manner and switched over to Walleye live bait jig heads that are designed to allow the attachment of a stinger leader line or extra jig directly below the top line tie.

We just began using underspins after all this time and it’s disconcerting that they have failed so easily while bass fishing. What brands/types of rigs help them hold up to the rigors of bass fishing?

Interesting, but where I usually fish I use the flashy swimmer type of weedless setup to get through the grass, and I am not sure I want a non-weedless hook on my set-up either. But it seems like it would be much better in open water.

Agreed. Interesting……but……? Love me some underpins w/a small plastic swim bait trailer. Kinda became one of my “go to” baits especially since spinner baits fell of my radar for some unknown reason years ago🤷🏻‍♂️. This is a “fix” for a problem that does not exist(for me). My hookup ration w/underspins is on par with all my baits(good). It does look like it would negatively effect the action, snag, foul….. Maybe not but I’m not taking the time to rig one up & find out. Sorry, slow day already. Just walked outside & found snow all over the streets completely unexpectantly here in Glen Rose. It was clear as a bell 1/2 hour ago! “Lake Effect Snow”? That’s Wheeler Branch Reservoir across the street.🤪

If you're in open water this one is hard to beat. If you're getting bit but not hookups I would think it is small sandbass or barfish. I would not use a trailer hook on one. It is a pretty small bait anyway. A 2# bass won't have any problem getting that whole thing in its mouth.

These Gamakatsu Underspins (both sizes) have been my favorites only because the swim bait trailers will last forever w/the screw lock heads. I like a 3-1/2”(and larger) Big Bite Baits Suicide Shad in pearl or(my favorite) Citrus Shad has been a really good combo for me. [Linked Image]
