I used TurboTax on my PC for 4-5 years from around 2000 to 2005. Since then I used TaxAct because I had self employment income and I found the TaxAct software a little easier with better entry pages for a lot of my expenses and adjustments. I saw the commercials for TurboTax that you could file any personal 2024 tax forms for free during the month of February as long as you used the phone app and did not use TurboTax in 2023.

I hate phone apps but since TaxAct was costing me $60 bucks each year, I downloaded the app, gathered my documents and sat down to do my taxes. 25 minutes later, I was done and the fee to file electronically was $0. I was able to take photos of my income and investment forms with zero errors. The complete process took me half the time of using my PC.

If you are confortable doing your own taxes, and you want to do it for free, I recommend the TurboTax app. In the app you can also choose to pay for upgraded service including audit protection. Mine are pretty straightforward so I am pleased
