Finally got the ever elusive double digit hybrid!!!

I was close to getting one this summer when I caught a 9.13 that cleared the water to attack my top water bait. We saw surfacing hybrids in 3 fow and threw some KVD sexy dawgs at them. I’ve never seen this before but this fish cleared the water in pursuit of my bait. One more shad and she would have been 10lbs.

This double digit fish that I got was caught deadsticking some 2.75” flooks (Baby Nasties from Slik Baits, Decatur, TX). We were drifting over a creek with the thumper on, fighting off hypothermia (not really, it was just windy and cold that day). And BOOM! Well it was more like the slightest crappie bite tap. I set the hook, started reeling and knew she was big. It reeled up like a big log and even took some drag. It didn’t fight as hard as a summer fish, but was full of eggs.

It did not look huge in this pic because I didn’t straight arm it. And you really can’t see the belly.


You can kinda see how big the belly was. Probably had 1.5lb of eggs in her.


This is a smaller 5lber. But this is the bait I was using.


This is the bait they have been chasing, so that is why I have down sized to the 2.75” flooks

The shad I've been seeing are that size too. My only DD hibbie was in 2012 so it's pretty illusive and special

I fished with a buddy last year and he got an 11.3. So they are in there! I just can’t seem to get one in the summer, because they aren’t full of eggs. I know another lake up here where there are some 15+ lbers and some massive striper. But it’s too late in the season, Water is too cold. It would be a great spot for a guys trip!!

Glad to see you are finding the fish. I need to get back up there.

I know this is TFF, but I live in Texas and fish SW Oklahoma, it’s the closest lake to me with Hybrid. 😉

It’s tough fishing right now because the water temp is in the low, low 40’s. If you find them, they will be big. I had another TFFer contact me that went up there this weekend and got skunked. Hopefully this warmer weather pushes the temps back up a little. I’m going to try this week and I will report back.
