Do y'all think the "no tax on SS" will happen? I still make pretty good at my job so I pay tax on 85% of my SS, hits me hard.

Trump was promoting this but I haven’t heard him say anything since the inauguration. Sure would help me.

I think OMB scoring would prove it to be too costly but perhaps they could means test it and make it less a hit on the budget.

Means testing is never ever the right answer

I don't think it will pass as those $$$ play a fairly big part in the funding of SS. They'd have to find some money to offset the loss of those tax dollars.

I`m OK as long as somebody keeps going to work and funding mine and my wife's. I love that mailbox money.

So the government confiscated 12.4% of my pay (employer contribution and mine), held it for 45 years, invested my money and made a return on it all those decades, and now they are taxing the puny allowance they give me.

Yep, that's the cliff notes version of how this particular Ponzi scheme works.

I think they spent it or at least sold themselves bonds and then spent it.

That's a fairly accurate description of what goes on other than the part about investing it and making a return, and the holding on to it part.

I would be pleased if the amount subject to tax went back to 50%, which is where it was before Clinton and the Dem Congress jacked it up to 85%.

you can thank Biden and Gore for SS being taxed . Biden was the vote in the Senate to pass taxing SS 50% , then about 7 years later , Gore was the tie breaking vote to raise it to 85% .

I completely forgot about this. Taking it back to 50% would be a big win for us retiree’s that wouldn’t cost that much.

What Is the Bill That Would Eliminate Social Security Taxes?
The You Earned It, You Keep It Act was introduced in January by Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota. The bill contains two main provisions:

Elimination of federal income tax on Social Security benefits
Assessment of Social Security payroll taxes on incomes of $250,000 or more
For 2025, Social Security payroll taxes will be assessed on incomes up to $176,100. The 12.4% tax is split between employers and employees. Self-employed workers are responsible for paying the entire amount themselves.

The You Earned It, You Keep It Act is awaiting action in the House Committee on Ways and Means.
