Aircraft have a system called TCAS which alerts them to any potential collision and informs the pilot what to do,

Now I have heard the Blackhawk copter did not have a functional transponder which would explain why TCAS did not work. I've also heard low level winds were strong at that time. It is very possible the copter or the aircraft saw each other and due to strong winds it may appear the aircraft (either one of them looked like they were going behind the other aircraft) Just think of this. An aircraft is traveling 260 degrees and the wind is strong from the south. The nose of that aircraft may very well be pointing well left of 260, meaning it could look like the aircraft is moving more southwest than what it actually is. Now down in low proximity of the ground I would guess that "crab effect" is less even with a 30mph with that regional jet.

This still shouldn't have happened. I'd love to hear what you guys think. It honestly hits me hard.

I worked in many facets in ATC.

TCAS is inhibited below ‘900 AGL,so neither crew would have got an RA even if the chopper had TCAS,they both should have had ADSB transponders so the data should be out pretty soon, but I think they were below ‘500 when the collision occurred.

This almost has to be on the helo or ATC.... Jet was on final and on the ILS (perhaps one of the commercial pilots can respond) .... I'm so sad for all involved.... this simply cannot happen....🙏🙏🙏

You kidding with this BS?

"fired all the air traffic controllers*.... Good grief man...

Do you really want me to list all the issues with the FAA/ATC/DEI during the past 4 years??? I'd be more than happy to do so.... and then DIRECTLY debate you on the facts...

Butch, under the circumstances, how you can let your political ideology cloud your common sense (Trump has been in office 10 days) in order to make such a patently ridiculous statement (parroting the latest corrupt media narrative) is beyond me....

67 people are D E A D less 12 hours Butch, and your FIRST instinct is to blame Trump??

No, sorry Butch..... You're talking to yourself in the mirror with that one...

Incidentally, it now looks as if the tower controller was communicating with the helo on 2 different frequencies.

My uneducated guess is that it was a very young man/woman with limited experience who made a mistake and got into the wrong airspace.

From what I can gather there's a helo flight corridor up and down the Potomac that crosses the final approach corridor into Reagan. Apparently this was a spacing error as the helo was suppose to pass behind the AA jet. Obviously the helo pilot didn't see the jet until it was too late, if at all.

This simply can't happen.....

But, over the past few years there have been numerous runway incursions, near collisions, etc. The airspace is getting very crowded, ATC equipment long in the tooth (severely outdated), and apparently ATC controllers being chosen via factors other than merit.....bad combo.
