Seems to me this is more on the helo than the jet. Helo shoulda not been in the airport region where altitudes coincide with commercial traffic.

I heard the TV talking heads say that the helo was on a regular travel route for those craft but that sounds pretty dangerous due to the low level congestion.

I get the blindness due to lights and such. Hoping you can shed some light on this. Reagan is pretty busy.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

prayers for the lost ---

I have had two close calls --one at Ohare ---just starting to land when the jet suddenly powered on hard , pull up and veered hard to the right --- the pilot literally announced after finally landing that we just missed another plane on the runway . Second --- going into salt lake , on approach slight turn left on decent --- suddenly the L1011 turns even harder left , the plane starts stalling , luggage bins popping open on the whole plane , luggage falling out , people screaming --jet suddenly pulls up hard ---plane is shuddering hard . we finally land , and the pilot tells us we just missed a Cesna in mid flight .
How does this happen ??

The one video clip makes it appear to my untrained eye, that the Helo flew into the jet? Prayers, this is horrible.

Seems like leadership may be making a comeback in America.

Here’s a video of American Airlines CEO, Robert Isom, handling this unfortunate situation about as well as it could be handled IMO. He got out front of it personally (within a couple of hours actually), appeared most genuine and was as transparent as he could be in offering all known details.

I think this is probably gold standard example of how to handle a situation like this.

This should not have happened. That airspace requires all aircraft have transponders and are in contact with ATC.

Aircraft have a system called TCAS which alerts them to any potential collision and informs the pilot what to do,

Now I have heard the Blackhawk copter did not have a functional transponder which would explain why TCAS did not work. I've also heard low level winds were strong at that time. It is very possible the copter or the aircraft saw each other and due to strong winds it may appear the aircraft (either one of them looked like they were going behind the other aircraft) Just think of this. An aircraft is traveling 260 degrees and the wind is strong from the south. The nose of that aircraft may very well be pointing well left of 260, meaning it could look like the aircraft is moving more southwest than what it actually is. Now down in low proximity of the ground I would guess that "crab effect" is less even with a 30mph with that regional jet.

This still shouldn't have happened. I'd love to hear what you guys think. It honestly hits me hard.

I worked in many facets in ATC.

Every executive in the transportation industry should take heed, as this video is a perfect example on how to do it.

Ok,

I’ll start the conspiracy theory based on what seems to be people’s opinion that this should have never happened for a number of reasons.

Is it possible it wasn’t an accident?

Still looking for details. The Blackhawk was on a training mission, with 3 aboard and the jet had 64 souls (including 4 crew). 19 known dead so far as search continues.

Family is everything!

Life is precious. We don’t have forever. We have now. This moment. We can choose to love our lives now.
