I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to do that.

From what I've read the pilot declared an in flight emergency (type/reason not reported) and was attempting to land when he obviously felt he no longer had control of the plane and elected to punch out. You can see that landing gear was down in the video.

Glad the pilot is safe. Also glad to see that the AF has retained its 100% efficiency record.

Glad the pilot is alive. One thing for sure, they didn't let it run out of fuel.
Hopefully they can figure out what caused this and prevent it on other ones.

From what I understand the aircraft takes over when it believes it cannot be flown by humans. I could be wrong.I bet the pilot had this going his way and the computer took it from him. Just a WAG.

Due to how it dropped first thing I thought was is it one of those stupid STOVL models... But it's an Air Force base so I would guess not.

Thankful no injuries or damage. I agree, sounds like the Avionics might have tried to take over...

The F-35 A's Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS) is a software feature designed to automatically prevent the aircraft from crashing into the ground by taking control and performing evasive maneuvers if the pilot becomes incapacitated or fails to react to an imminent terrain collision, essentially acting as a safety net to avoid controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). Only in this situation will the aircraft flight control system attempt to take command of the aircraft. Even then the pilot can easily override it.
