I've recently retired and lost my employer sponsored dental insurance last Nov. For as long as I can remember I've gone to the dentist twice a year for cleanings and annual Xrays. I'm now trying to decide if I should get dental insurance or just pay out of pocket for cleanings and any dental issues which may arise. Haven't had many dental issues over the years, but did break a tooth last year and having insurance did come in handy. For any of y'all that are retired or are self insured, what have you done regarding insurance? I've been looking online at dental insurance rates and it seems the $65-$70 a month seems to be the pretty standard monthly cost, does that seem about right? Any thoughts regarding this this would be appreciated!

I always had dental insurance when I was employed, but I retired in 2020 and have self-insured ever since. I haven`t even checked on what it would cost for a Medicare plane that covered dental.

I am in the same boat. I have not even looked but think if I keep my teeth clean I should be able to keep the cost down.

If they rot out I'll get out a whittling knife and make some, kidding of course.

I have a Humana Plan Part B which has a good dental plan attached. It covers 100 percent two cleanings with x rays and exams. It also covers procedures usually pays 50 to 60 percent of major dental work. I have kept up with my dental check ups my whole life and I am lucky to have never had any major dental work done since being retired. thumb

Retired, we have Cigna dental, $35 a month each. It’s minimal coverage, cleaning and X-rays. I just went thru the broken tooth/crown thing and it cost me $700, they didn’t cover a few parts of the crown procedure. We are already looking for new dental insurance.

I think I have some kind of Dental with my Medicare Advantage but its not worth much. Probably better to just pay out of pocket.

Thanks, Billy

Yeah that's what I have. It pays for one exam and cleaning per year. Potential high dental bills are a good reason to take care of your teeth.

Potential high medical bills are a good reason to take care of your body- specifically what you eat, but it doesn’t seem to matter. We live in a world where no one changes their oil and expects the warranty to still be in effect.

Hard part for me is finding a good provider that accepts Part B dental. Many here in Temple don't. I guess I should clarify. They will accept the Part B insurance, but they aren't a network provider so my out of pocket cost increases substantially.

Dental insurance is just a discount and a scam if your are paying for it your self.

Most have either a $1K or $1500 maximun payout

Just pass on it and pay as you go, No such thing as good dental insurance, it's doesn't work the same way as Medical.

That's because health insurance will cover it. Not to mention the long list of pills that can take care of stuff that could be taken care of through diet and exercise.
