Anybody running Ionics in this cold snap we’ve had? How does the charger hold up in cold like this? Thank you, just upgraded and curious.

Charger isnt the issue with cold temps, its the battery cells themselves. Charging in freezing temps in a no no for all lithium (lifepo4), Ionic has built in temp sensors so the battery will shut down @26 degrees. We have sold thousands of them and no issues when it comes cold temps other then having to manually wake them up vs having a charger that will do it for you.

Just leave them off the charger. It's not a best practice to leave LiFePO4s at 100% anyhow.

Is this just a charging issue or do I have to wake them up when I get to the lake in low temps?

Good question….but, unless it’s below 24 degrees, I’m not sure you’d have to do anything. I do know once one goes to “sleep”…..it takes a fair amount of voltage to wake them up. I had one of my 50ah Ionics that would just shut off on me. I sent it in and they “repaired” it. During that time, I just went and bought another one. I keep the repaired one in my truck just in case I have one do it again.

When my old one would go to sleep, simply plugging in the charger would make it come to life….like nothing ever happened.

I like lithium batteries, but I don’t like the “unknown” [censored] about them. I just want a several hundred dollar battery to work when I want to go fishing.

I've been saying this forever, and everyone says BS. My abs my son so allot of rc car fun, batteries don't like staying at 100%. Thanks for bringing this up

This cold snap isn't likely to make the cells get below freezing. Even then it takes a lot to significantly damage them

Unless you fish a LOT I wouldn't sweat keeping them at 100%. These things are rated for 4000+ cycles

I assume if you are spending that much on batteries that you keep your boat in covered storage. This isn’t nearly cold enough to make the inside of your boat cold enough to effect a battery. Mine were at 35 degrees yesterday morning and it was 18 outside.

We sell a lot to the ice fisherman up north its been kidna rare having them shut down over temps, we have seen it more on the trolling motor side with 50amp batteries with sub par wiring and corroded breakers. .


When the BMS senses a problem it will shut the battery down no power in or out. The BMS needs to energized aka waken up to be brought back to normal.


Charging and when the temp of the battery drops below whatever temp is programed to that specific brand. Some chargers have a wake up feature built in, if not jumping with another battery + to pos - to neg for 3-5 sec. It can very brand to brand as some will wake on its own.
